rTMS Tried in Mania: Eight patients manic
bipolar patients were given fast rTMS (five trains of 15 s, 80% of the motor
threshold, 10 Hz) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). All
were taking medication during the treatment. There was a significant improvement
of manic symptoms. No side effects were reported. The results show a significant
improvement of mania when patients are treated with fast rTMS over the right
DLPFC. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation as an add-on therapy in the
treatment of mania: a case series of eight patients. Saba G, Rocamora JF, et al.

Res. 2004 Sep 30;128(2):199-202. Ed: Only double-blind
controlled studies with a sham comparison can evaluate whether this treatment is
of any value. However, ECT has been used in the past with mania and rTMS is much
more benign. |
