While it is currently of little or no therapeutic value for schizophrenia, MRI and CT scans have found many abnormalities linked to schizophrenia. I will start putting them on this page. The severity of auditory hallucinations to be significantly correlated (P < 0.001) with volume loss in the left transverse temporal gyrus of Heschl (primary auditory cortex) and left (inferior) supramarginal gyrus, as well as middle/inferior right prefrontal gyri. This demonstrates a pattern of distributed structural abnormalities specific for auditory hallucinations and suggests hallucination-specific alterations in areas of a frontotemporal network for processing auditory information and language. Neuroanatomy of "hearing voices": a frontotemporal brain structural abnormality associated with auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia. Gaser C, Nenadic I, Volz HP, Buchel C, Sauer H. Cereb Cortex. 2004 Jan;14(1):91-6 Neurofibrillary tangles are more frequent among schizophrenic patients who received pharmacologic antipsychotic treatment. Curr Drug Targets CNS Neurol Disord. 2004 Dec;3(6):515-33. Abnormal Lymphocytes in Schizophrenics Reported: In a study of 59 drug-free in-patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 31 normal controls, the frequency of small lymphocytes in schizophrenic patients was lower and that of large lymphocytes, LAL and atypical lymphocytes (lymphoblasts: LB) was higher than in controls (all p= < 0.01). The volume density (Vv) of mitochondria in LAL in individuals with schizophrenia was lower than in controls (p<0.05), correlated negatively with the frequency of LB, Vv and number of lysosomes in LB (all p<0.01) and with the psychosis severity (p<0.05). In schizophrenic patients a trend towards positive correlations between the frequency of LB and psychosis severity were found (p<0.07). The ultrastructure of lymphocytes in schizophrenia.
